Quebec City, Quebec

Picture this: you’re on a game show. It’s a trivia game show but not the Jeopardy that you covet. It’s a show called Design to Win on HGTV. Your present girlfriend and future wife / ex-wife persuaded you to try out and you were accepted.

It’s time for your episode and you’re in the zone. Bam! You hit the button and start collecting points. 18th Century French horticulture? You mean “espalier”? Bam! 40 minutes it’s all over and you stand triumphantly in the middle of two soccer moms as the winner of your episode.

What’s the grand prize? A trip for two on 1st Class Via Rail to Quebec City to stay for 3 nights at the esteemed Chateau Frontenac. Mais oui! With a side trip up the St. Lawrence to go whale watching. Quoi? It was amazing.

Weird note: That summer, my girl and I kept running into noted politician Bob Rae in downtown Toronto. By the third time we exchanged mutual head nods. Well who do you think we bumped into on the streets of Old Quebec City? BOB RAE!

Zut alors!
